2024 Burnsville Tragedy Timeline: Honoring Fallen Heroes

 The Response and Standoff

In the early morning hours of Sunday, February 18, 2024, Burnsville police officers were dispatched to a home on the 12600 block of 33rd Avenue South. A 911 call had been placed regarding a domestic situation inside the residence, where an armed man had barricaded himself. Crucially, seven young children—ranging in age from 2 to 15 years old—were locked inside the home with him.

Officers arrived on the scene and spent several hours negotiating with the suspect, trying to resolve the situation peacefully and ensure the safety of the family.

The Ambush

The situation escalated rapidly around 5:30 AM. The suspect suddenly opened fire on the first responders inside the home without warning, utilizing multiple high-powered firearms.

• Officer Paul Elmstrand and Officer Matthew Ruge were shot while inside the home during the initial exchange.
• Firefighter/Paramedic Adam Finseth, who was stationed nearby as part of a SWAT task force, rushed directly into the line of fire to provide emergency medical aid to the wounded officers. He was shot and fatally wounded while trying to save them.
• Sgt. Adam Medlicott was also shot and wounded during the firefight as the officers attempted to retreat and shield one another.

The wounded responders were evacuated from the scene by an armored vehicle and rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, where Elmstrand, Ruge, and Finseth were tragically pronounced dead.

The Resolution

Following the initial shooting, a heavily armed standoff continued for several more hours. The suspect continued to fire hundreds of rounds at law enforcement from the home's windows. Later that morning, the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Law enforcement successfully breached the home and rescued all seven children safely. None of the family members inside sustained physical injuries
